In an unprecedented, politically brazen move, Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner, has issued a ruling which will allow new voters to register and vote on the same day. There is a window of 5 days where this situation can happen and it begins on Tuesday September 30th and runs through Saturday October 4th. Typically a new voter has to wait 30 days after registering before they can vote. It is illegal to register and vote on the same day in most states, including Ohio until Brunner's ruling. The reason it is illegal is because it invites fraud. Typically, the Board of Elections has a 30 day window to make sure someone is who they say they are. In this situation a college kid from Pennsylvania, for example, could walk into the Board of Elections with a utility bill as identification, register to vote and the actually vote at the same time. Then the same college kid could vote absentee in Pennsylvania. The Democratic Party is so excited about this opportunity they have started referring to the 5 day window as "The Golden Week".
